Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception and attitude about noise in adolescent and to give the basic data for adolescent¢¥s hearing conservation program development and prevention education against their hearing loss.
The subjects of this study were 253 students in two vocational high schools in D city. This study was carried out from April. 24, 2000 to May. 18, 2000.
The instrument was a questionnaire developed by Rhee, Kyung Yong and Yi, Kwan Hyung(1996) & Luckes, E. and Johnson, M(1998).
Data was analysis by a SPSS/Win 10.0 program with frequency, percentage, Mean, S D, t-test, ANOVA.
The results of this study were as follows.
1. The following 4 factors were obtained by factor analysis; concern about hearing(F1), perceived susceptibility(F2), Knowledge about noise(F3), apathy of hearing loss from noise 61.7% of variance was explained by 4 factors.
2. The average of total perception and attitude about noise was 49.24+1.72 The average of concern about hearing scored the highest 3.54+0.69, the average of perceived knowledge about noise scored the lowest 1.92+0.61. The average of apathy of hearing loss from noise scored 2.97+0.86.
3. Significant variables influencing perception and attitude about noise were marks(F=3.19, p=0.04) and concern of parent about children¢¥s health(F=2.83, p=0.02) in perceived susceptibility, grade(t=2.34, p=0.02) and concern of parent about children¢¥s health(3.77, p=0.02) in knowledge about noise and father¢¥s education(F=3.38, p=0.02) in apathy of hearing loss from noise.
4. Significant variables influencing the factors related the hearing were family history of hearing disturbance(t=2.96, p=0.03) and experience of hearing examination(t=-2.32, p=0.02) in perceived susceptibility and using of earphone( t=-1.98, p=0.05) in apathy of hearing loss from noise.
This study has shown that the perception and attitude about noise were related to adolescent¢¥s hearing and important to adolescent¢¥s hearing conservation. Therefore this data should be considered when designing a hearing conservation program and prevention education.
